Assignment 1. Construe this poem.    In black ink, write out the Latin of the poem.  Look up each word in the glossary that you were given, and write the definition above the Latin word in blue ink.

Assignment 2.  Paying close attention to what you are doing, write a very accurate and literal translation of the Latin in pencil so that, if necessary, you are able to change it.  i.e., translate the poem into good English.

Assigment 3.   You have a choice.  a) Write a poem from the sparrow's point of view.  As you could see, Lesbia loves the little bird - make sure that you express the bird's affection for her.  Describe how it feels when the bird realizes that it must die and leave her. or b) Illustrate ONE line from the poem.  Make sure that the woman is in a typical Roman setting like a garden or atrium.

TONE

Although Catullus deals with death in both poems, the tone of the two poems is very different.  The tone of a poem deals with the attitude that the author or speaker is trying to convey.  What do you think is the major difference in the way Catullus deals with death in these two poems?  Using specific words and phrases from each poem to support your answer, write what you think these differences are below.
