Nominative

The nominative case is used to show the subject of a sentence.  In English, the subject usually comes first in the sentence and performs the action of the verb.  Of course, a subject is always a noun that answers who or what is doing the action.

In Latin, we use nominative case endings.  Nouns in Latin are grouped based on their pattern of endings.  The first pattern of endings is called the first declension.  It is usually feminine and the nominative always ends in -a.  The nominative singular and plural of the first declension is below.

-a -ae

But this is not the only use of the nominative case.  The nominative can also be used as the predicate nominative.
